Straw bale constructions are considered as a promising solution towards the goal of decarbonisation of building sector. In particular, its use as an alternative thermal insulation and load-bearing material has been promoted. This study provide a thorough review of material properties of straw bale including mechanical, thermophysical and hygric. Furthermore, mechanical, hygrothermal, energy and acoustical performance as well as life cycle assessment of straw bale constructions are reviewed and discussed. The critical evaluation of the recent research confirms that straw bales can provide satisfactory results as thermal insulation material compared to conventional materials , while in parallel reflects a high potential for constructions with low embodied emissions.

First, let’s define load bearing:  that means, simply, the straw bale walls are stacked up on top of the foundation to the roof height, some kind of a header (usually wood) is placed on top of the straw bales with attachments of one sort or another to the foundation, and then the roof is put on top of that header. Therefore, the straw bales bear the direct weight or ‘load’ of the roof–in technical terms , that’s called a ‘dead load’–and if there’s any snow resting on the roof in winter the bales have to bear that weight too–such temporary loads are called ‘live load’.

We are building a straw bale house which will be heated with both electric heat pump and wood burning stove. We plan to use 26 guage metal on the roof, with no decking- just 2x4 purlins. The roof has an 8/12 pitch and is well vented. part of it is made with a scissors truss, so we had our trusses built with an energy heel to allow for more blown in cellulose insulation. I have talked to more than one contractor, and get differing ideas about how to lay the roofing material. One says spray foam under the metal, another says use a rolled underlayment between the metal and the purlins that will hold moisture and release it back slowly, another says just lay the metal and use the blown insulation.

As we've mentioned a few times in this article, moisture is the biggest physical problem of building with straw bales. Moisture in the bales causes mold, which causes the straw to rot. You have to take precautions from the moment you buy the bales. A rainy day of construction could ruin exposed bales, so when the bales arrive on site , store them off the ground and under tarps. During design and construction, take special care to keep water out of the home . Just as the toe-ups on the foundation provide protection from moisture below, roof designs that incorporate overhangs will provide protection from above.

Work at height: preventing falls

Falls are the second highest cause of death in agriculture – every year at least eight people die falling from a height. Those who survive suffer broken bones and worse. Falls often happen from roofs, lofts, ladders, vehicles , bale stacks, and unsuitable access equipment , such as buckets. These accidents and injuries cause you pain and cost your farm time and money . Most fall injuries can be avoided. The law says you need to follow these rules in this order : avoid work at height where you can; and if not use work equipment or measures to prevent falls; and if not use work equipment that minimises the distance and consequences of a fall.
